Five reasons you can’t miss Durham Women’s derby day clash with Sunderland

It’s been a month full of derbies – and Durham Women’s October schedule concludes with the River Wear Derby against Sunderland.

The Blues face the Wearsiders in another crucial game in the Barclays Women’s Championship on Sunday, October 20 (12pm kick-off). With four league wins to our name already, we’re looking to continue our promising start to the campaign and keep up the charge at the top of the table. And with hundreds of tickets already snapped-up, we’re getting closer to a sell-out crowd backing the Blues on our return home.

But there’s still time for you to secure your spot at Derby Day – and here’s five reasons you can’t afford to miss the big game…

A RIVALRY RENEWED

The River Wear Derby is always a fiercely fought affair, and both sides will once again be desperate for three points – as well as the local pride on stake in this encounter.

These two sides haven’t met at Maiden Castle since November 2023, when Sunderland were 1-0 winners, but the last clash between the pair yielded eight goals as the Black Cats won 5-3 on home soil.

We could be in for another thriller this weekend.

A PERFECT MONTH?

It’s been a fantastic month so far for Durham, who kicked-off October with a comeback win at Blackburn Rovers in the Women’s League Cup.

After trailing for much of the game, late goals from Kaila Novak and Eleanor Ryan-Doyle saw the Blues claim the cup victory.

And that was followed-up by a dramatic triumph at Newcastle United last time out, as Mollie Lambert struck in he final minute of the game to secure the three points for Durham.

It’ll be a tough test this Sunday, but can Durham make it a perfect month?
