BIG MATCH PREVIEW: Watford (H)

Durham Women will welcome Watford to Maiden Castle this weekend – and here’s everything you need to know…

The Wildcats face the Hornets in the first game of the new FA Women’s Championship season after a strong pre-season.

And here’s all the key information on the first game of the campaign:

Watford have been a regular foe for Durham since their admission into the second tier of women’s football in 2014 – but have spent recent campaigns in the FA Women’s National League.

Clinton Lancaster’s side have enjoyed great success in the Southern Division and were afforded upward movement earlier this year after an application process.

The squad already contained a number of players with top-level experience – including Rosie Kmita, Renee Hector, Emma Beckett and Welsh international striker Helen Ward.

And the ranks have been bolstered by the likes of Amber Stobbs, Ylenia Priest and Jenna Legg.

Watford will be a stern opening day test and a side to watch throughout the campaign.

Durham Women will be without forward Nicki Gears who remains sidelined with a long-term injury.

Speaking ahead of the game, winger Emily Roberts said: “I think everyone is just buzzing to get going.

“Hopefully it’ll be a great atmosphere with the fans back in the ground.

“You can’t go into any game not thinking it’ll be difficult. Watford will have a point to prove and it should be a good test.”
