Durham Women FC is pleased to announce that local businessman and South Shields FC (“SSFC”) Chairman and co-owner Geoff Thompson, with backing from his co-investor at SSFC, has agreed to acquire a majority shareholding in the club – securing its future for the 2026/27 season and beyond.
Mr. Thompson brings a wealth of experience in North East football, having played a pivotal role in the growth of South Shields FC through investment in facilities, infrastructure, and community initiatives.
As part of the acquisition plan, club founders Lee Sanders and Dawn Hepple will remain as shareholders, while the existing executive management team will continue to lead the club’s day-to-day operations. This investment marks an exciting new chapter for Durham Women FC, providing a strong foundation for continued growth on and off the pitch. The club would also like to thank everyone who expressed an interest in investing during this process.
Speaking after agreeing the deal, Dawn Hepple, co-founder of Durham Women FC, said: “We’re delighted to have Geoff and his team stepping up and securing an exciting future for the club.
“The support we’ve received from our staff, players and supporters throughout this process has been incredible, and we’re truly grateful for it.
“We would also like to thank Patrick and Frances Connolly for their invaluable support over the past three years, which has helped the club reach this stage.
“We’re now looking ahead with confidence and excitement to the 2026/27 season and to working with Geoff and his team as we continue to build and grow Durham Women FC.”
Lee Sanders, co-founder of Durham Women FC, added: “After what quickly became a difficult situation to deal with, in a very short period of time, we’re delighted to have a partner at the club who understands the region and North East football, and has the vision, knowledge and support system to help us realise all the ambitious plans we have for the club moving forward.
“That includes the proposed high performance centre and stadium at the Riverside in Chester-le-Street, which remains firmly in the club’s plans.
“I’d like to thank Geoff for helping us make this happen at such a tough time for everyone involved with the club, and the team at WSL Football who have been very supportive during the process.
“Ultimately, everyone involved has worked hard to deliver the best outcome possible for our staff, players at all levels, parents and fans.
“I would also like to reiterate the thanks given to Frances and Patrick Connolly. Without their support it would have been impossible to get us to this stage.
“The support that the wider football community has offered to everyone at the club has been incredible, and not just locally but globally.
“It’s time to look forward now to a new season and the positive developments that will take place over the next twelve months.”
Geoff Thompson commented: “With a decision required within a matter of days, the overriding priority was to safeguard Durham Women FC and protect its long-term future.
“We firmly believe the club plays a crucial role within the local community and deserves every opportunity to grow, progress, and succeed.
“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Mr. Jason Ye, my newest partner at South Shields FC, for the trust and confidence he has placed in me, in this club, and in the North East region as a whole.
“Together, we share a strong belief in the future of women’s football. The women’s game continues to grow at an exceptional pace, and we are confident that Durham Women FC is well positioned to be part of this exciting journey.
“Working alongside Lee and Dawn, the club’s supporters, and our local partners, we are committed to unlocking the club’s full potential while ensuring it remains deeply connected to the culture, values, and identity that make the North East so special.”
