Match Reaction | Adam Furness reflects on Charlton

We caught up with Durham Women head coach Adam Furness following a narrow defeat against Charlton Athletic.

Here’s what he had to say…

Furness on the result…

“Not the result we wanted at all.

“Hugely disappointed, I don’t think we were quite out the races for chunks of the first half and we caused our own downfall a little bit with the goal.

“I think the overriding feeling today is just real frustration with some of the decisions.”

Furness on the game…

“I think it’s definitely something we need to look back at.

“We came out really well in the first ten minutes – I thought we were really lively, really progressive with our play and created a couple of little half-chances.

“We maybe could have gone in front with one but then over the course of the period I don’t think we created enough.

“Credit to Charlton, I thought they defended deep and well, but in the game changing moments there to see that handball on the line.

“I’d have fancied us to really create enough to win the game then, so not good enough from us overall in terms of our play, but real difficult one to take again in terms of the decisions.”

Furness on being back after the break…

“It’s nice to be back in terms of playing matches.

“It’s been a month since we had that fixture down in Bristol, obviously with the postponement at Brighton, so it’s been a long time coming.

“It’s great to be back but unfortunately we haven’t quite delivered today.”

Furness on the goal…

“Ideally, if there was an extra five or ten minutes to play when that happened, we might have seen a real challenge being thrown at that Charlton back line or we might have nicked an equaliser there.

“It wasn’t meant to be today.”

Furness on the fans…

“Freezing day here, great to see them back here at Maiden Castle, staying to the end.

“They helped us to get that late goal back.

“It would have been great to see the place rocking if we managed to get a second one, but yeah, big thanks to all the fans coming out again in the freezing cold.”
