Match Preview | Lauren Briggs on Southampton clash

We caught-up with Lauren Briggs ahead of the long trip to Southampton on Sunday, November 10.

Here’s what she had to say ahead of the clash at St Mary’s Stadium…

Briggs on the win at Blackburn Rovers last weekend…

“We went into that game full of confidence and we needed to bounce back from the Sunderland game.

“We knew we had a lot more to give and to prove and I think it was a game of two halves.

“It was slow out of the blocks in the first half and we were below our standards and we recognised that at half-time.

“We had 45 minutes to rectify that and make it right.

“We got our first goal back through Beth and a great free-kick and then we knew the momentum had shifted with us and we got the three points that were very important.”

Briggs on her first goal of the season in that triumph...

“There’s times in games when it feels like different people are going to be called upon.

“Beth started us off and the momentum with us. I wanted to contribute and get forward as much as I could.

“I felt like there was acres of space down my side and luckily I got a goal.

“I think it [the celebration] was probably relief!

“We went into the game with the intention of showing our quality and we let ourselves down in the first half.

“So when my goal went in it was just a big sigh of relief I suppose.”

Briggs on the season so far…

“It’s a long season and we’ll really reflect at Christmas and see where we’re at.

“We’ve got a hard run of games coming up and every game is really competitive and will go to the 90th minute.

“As long as we concentrate within our camp and stay very grounded, we’ll be alright.

“The momentum is with us and we have confidence within the group.

“It’s a domino effect – you play with confidence, get the result and then you’re excited for the next challenge on a Sunday and whatever that brings.”

Briggs on Southampton…

“We know their quality and what they can bring.

“We have to concentrate on our roles and responsibilities and execute them as best as we can.

“I have full confidence in all the girls.”

Briggs on the travelling support…

“It’s a special feeling to walk out at an away fixture and there’s all those away fans.

“We’ve got a great following behind us and it’s really crucial – and it has been this season.

“It’s shown already, home and away, how important they are.

“Whether it’s the first minute or the last you can hear them and it’s always nice that we can spend time with them at the end of the game.

“They’re so valuable and really important to us and we’re looking forward to seeing them when they make the trip down.”
