Match Preview | Becky Salicki on Newcastle United

We caught-up with defender Becky Salicki ahead of the trip to Newcastle United in the Barclays Women’s Championship.

Here’s what the centre back had to say ahead of the trip to Kingston Park…

Salicki on the midweek win at Blackburn…

“We utilised the squad that we’ve got and it shows just how squad are as a whole.

“We went under the cosh but fought back and got the three points.”

Salicki on wearing the captain’s armband for the first time in that game…

“It’s a very proud moment for me.

“I’ve been here for many years now and I was really proud to lead the team out in the second half of that game.”

Salicki on the game with Newcastle United…

“Every single team is going to be a difficult test this season so it’s just another game.

“That’s the mentality we go into it with.

“We’ve been working really hard all week, we’ve got our plan and we’ll stick to it.”

Salicki on our new style of play…

“It’s really enjoyable – and the comments from the sides [the fans] are that they’ve all thoroughly enjoyed the change.

“We’re playing more aggressive and the style of play we’re playing is exciting to watch and be part of it.

“As a collective, the team are in really good spirits right now.”

Salicki on the mood in the camp…

“It’s been incredible.

“I think we’ve lost it the last couple of years but this year it’s just a different breed.

“I’m smiling because I’m so excited about what’s going on at the minute.

“We’re not getting ahead of ourselves, we’re taking each game as it comes.

“We’re all part of this family together and we dig in deep.”

Salicki on a three-game week…

“It’s been non-stop.

“I think that’s been critical for us. We don’t really stop, we analyse everything – not just what we’re not doing well, but when we’re doing well and how we can improve and be better from it.”

Salicki on the away support…

“They’re huge for us.

“Home and away, the support pushes over us over the edge sometimes and hopefully we get a good crowd there on Sunday.”
