Sarah Wilson previews season opener against Sheffield United

By Dom Aberdeen

We caught-up with club captain Sarah Wilson ahead of Sunday’s season opener against Sheffield United in the Barclays Women’s Championship at Maiden Castle.

The defender embarks on her 11th season at the Club – her 10th as captain.

She said: “It’s ridiculous really when I’m thinking back to one of the first games I came and watched when it was over at New Ferens Park – Durham v Doncaster – there was maybe a couple of hundred fans there, but if you look at it now, we average over a thousand a game.

Wilson on new faces…

“We’ve brought in some really nice people and I think that’s the most important thing.

“Obviously they’re great players, but I think that when they’re good people they fit in
really well with our group.

“It’s been great to have the new girls coming in and just develop the squad.”

Wilson on welcoming the Blades…

“We’re buzzing to get going.

“I think when you’ve worked so hard over pre-season, that’s what you’re working
towards.

“Obviously, there’s a little bit of pre-game nerves but we’re just really looking forward
to getting on the pitch and get into the game.”

Wilson her hopes for the season…

“I just want to continue to help the team as much as I can.

“Continue to support, continue to drive standards, to get as many clean sheets as I
can and get as many wins as we can.”

Wilson’s message for the fans…

“We hope that you’re as excited as much as we are.

“It’s going to be another really really good season and we’re going to need your support as always.”
