Sunday, March 3 saw Sarah Robson scoop her third North East Football Writers’ Women’s Player of the Year trophy.
Robson claimed the trophy for 2023, in a year which saw her achieve success at both domestic and international level.
At a star-studded ceremony at Ramside Hall, the Northern Irish international was honoured alongside Newcastle United’s Kieran Trippier, Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney and Sunderland Women’s Katy Watson.
Robson was presented her award by NEFWA chair Colin Young, and gave the below speech when interviewed by BBC’s Ian Dennis:
Speaking after the ceremony, Robson said: “Not once did I think I’d win it!
“When I won it the first year I was completely shocked because there’s a lot of good players in the North East.
“It’s just the consistency over the years and playing every week, and to win it the third year has been amazing and is probably testament to club and country.
“The last year has been good,” she continued.
“Of course we’d have liked to be higher in the table and competing like in previous years, but for myself it’s been nice to be playing every week.
“With the academy, they finished third in the league last year and there’s been massive development with players stepping up to the first-team.
“The highlight of last year has to be the 100 caps for Northern Ireland.
“It was a moment that I never really thought I’d get – especially as I got my 50 caps about ten years ago, so it was a long time coming and a massive weight off my shoulders.
“I’m only the third woman to do it for Northern Ireland too.
Robson was joined at the ceremony by a number of her teammates in addition to her family.
