Sarah Wilson: “The Hard Work Isn’t Stopping”

We caught-up with skipper Sarah Wilson as Durham Women headed into the international break following a point at London City Lionesses.

The last-ditch leveller was the least the Blues deserved after a fine showing in the capital, which offered plenty of positives to take into the final six games of the campaign.

And here’s what the club captain had to say…

Wilson on taking the positives from a difficult run of fixtures…

“There’s definitely been positives to take, more so in the London City game.

“We conceded initially and it’s one of those things that when you’re going through a a bit of a sticky pitch and concede an own goal, you think – ‘how are going to dig ourselves out of this?’

“But we came back in that game twice and with such a late equaliser, that just shows the attitude among the group.

“Yes, it has been a rough couple of weeks but it’s nothing none of us haven’t gone through before.

“It’s something we’re using to refocus and rebuild.”

Wilson on showing character to bounce back from setbacks…

“Looking back at the Lewes result, it was another late equaliser and we did deserve more out of the game.

“In football sometimes that happens – you don’t get the results you deserve – but it’s all about how you bounce back and keep going.

“That’s the best thing about this squad. We’ll never, ever stop or give up.”

Wilson on performances not necessarily being reflected in results…

“That’s the harsh reality of football and sometimes you really do have to learn the hard way.

“Nothing ever comes easy but it’s something we’re working towards and the hard work isn’t stopping.

“We’ve had a bit of a shift in mentality over the past month or so and it’s brought us closer together, and it’s really important.”

Wilson on the draw at London City Lionesses…

“It was one of those games where we had to go and perform.

“A point away from home is always good and London City are a team that are probably similar to us in that they have some really good players, play really good football but the results haven’t always been there for them.

“It was all about who wanted it and who was going to push themselves to get the result.

“You could see in the celebrations at the end that it felt like a win for us, and we have to take those little wins.

“Obviously we didn’t get the three points – and that’s what we went for – but that point away from home was massive and is something to build on.”

Wilson on the final six games of the season…

“This league is ridiculous, and it’s so interesting.

“Even now you can’t call it – anyone could go and take it.

“Every game we go in to, everyone is fighting for something and it’s really important that we forget about the outside noise and focus on the quality we have.

“We know the football we can play because we’ve proved it, so we just need to focus on that.”

Wilson on how important the fans will be…

“They’ve backed us all the way.

“They haven’t given up on us and when you’re going through a rough patch, to know that you’ve got the fans behind you is massive.

“They came out at London City which is one of our furthest away games and we heard the drum the whole way which is incredible.

“Sometimes on these away games they make it feel like a home game because of the noise they bring, so we know they’ll be with us right until the very end and that’s something we’re grateful for.”
