Claire Ditchburn: “You Have To Keep Working”

Claire Ditchburn praised the willingness of her side to keep working after they earned a late point at Lewes.

Grace Riglar’s header looked set to hand the Rooks victory at the Dripping Pan, only for Eleanor Ryan-Doyle’s 95th minute cross to find the back of the net via a home defender’s foot.

And Ditchburn felt a point was what the Blues deserved for a spirited showing on the road.

“I think on the balance of the game a point each was probably a fair result,” she admitted.

“I thought we did well in the first half and then perhaps in the second half and the wind has got up and it’s not as conducive to a great spectacle.

“But we kept working, we kept plugging away and it’s always nice to get a last minute equaliser.”

Speaking about that leveller, Ditchburn said: “It was an excellent ball into the box.

“It’s one of those balls that just makes it so hard for defenders and that was really pleasing.

“We committed numbers forward and we kept pushing right until the final whistle.”

Prior to the goal, Durham hit the bar, the post and saw numerous promising opportunities land in the gloves of home stopper Sophie Whitehouse.

So was there ever a point for Ditchburn where it felt as if it was going to be one of those days?

“It did towards the end.

“We looked very bright in the first half and I felt as though a goal was definitely coming, and straight after their goal I still felt quite confident.

“But then as the chances pile up and you hit the woodwork and have a couple of near misses, you do start to think to yourself ‘okay, maybe it is going to be one of those days’.

“But you have to keep working and that’s exactly what the girls did.”

Ryan-Doyle made a key impact after being introduced as a second half substitute and she – alongside Amy Andrews who was introduced shortly before – aided the team in their late rally.

And Ditchburn was quick to praise the impact made by the duo.

“I think they really took their opportunity,” she said.

“They had an impact, they made a difference and Eleanor got the assist – and it was an important one for us.”

At the other end, meanwhile, Durham’s defenders impressed throughout and left Tatiana Saunders relatively untested on her return to the Dripping Pan.

“This league is so competitive and every game we play in is a tight game,” added Ditchburn.

“There’s always spells in the game where you have to defend well and weather a little bit of a storm.

“We did that again today and it’s good that we know we’ve got that to fall back on when we need to.”
