Amy Andrews: “We Came Out Really Strong”

Amy Andrews praised her teammates after they claimed a bonus point win over Sheffield United.

The forward netted her third of the season to put Durham ahead in the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup tie, but Jess Sigsworth’s late strike sent the game to penalties.

And after a gruelling 20-kick shootout, it was the Blues who claimed the additional point – and Andrews was quick to praise her teammates for their character and performance.

“I thought first half we came out really strong,” she said.

“We were constantly going at them, attacking, and off the ball we were pressing them as much as we could.

“Second half, we did back down a little bit – but then came through on penalties.

“It was a very long shootout – and freezing cold – but I’m very proud of the girls.”

The tension in the stands was palpable during the penalties – but what was the mood like on the pitch?

“I’m just thinking – please score, and Neesh please save!,” explained Andrews.

“Especially in the cold, it feels worse.

“But I’m very proud of the girls for finishing them.”

Her well-taken first-half goal was Andrews’ first since September – and her delighted at being back on the scoresheet was evident.

“I’m buzzing.

“It’s about time I got on the scoresheet and I’m just proud of the girls for going the whole 90 minutes.”

The forward was also quick to praise the 624 fans who braved the cold evening at Maiden Castle.

“I’ve thanked as many people as I could because it’s absolutely freezing and I don’t know how they stood and watched the whole game.

“I really appreciate their support always.”
