Match Preview: Abby Holmes looks ahead to Blackburn Rovers

Abby Holmes is hoping Durham can build on the positives of their trip to Southampton when they welcome Blackburn Rovers this weekend.

The Blues return to home turf on Sunday, October 22 (12pm kick-off) when they face Rovers in the Barclays Women’s Championship.

It comes after a narrow defeat for the Wildcats at Southampton and, while the result was disappointing, Holmes was keen to take the positives from an encouraging performance.

“It’s the best football we’ve played all season,” she said of the trip to the South Coast.

“The passing patterns were working, little triangles, and we had a few chances.

“Hopefully we can roll that into Sunday.”

This will be the second time in just over a week that Durham and Blackburn have met, after an entertaining FA Women’s Continental Tyres Cup meeting under the lights last week.

And while Durham ran-out 3-2 winners on that occasion, Holmes knows it will count for little when the two teams lock horns again – especially given Blackburn’s fine start to the league campaign.

“They’re going to be a good test and they’ve had a great start to the season,” she added.

“Obviously the Conti Cup match we managed to win, but there were a lot of changes on both sides.”

Holmes and her teammates are once again set to be roared on by a strong crowd at Maiden Castle – with tickets remaining on sale HERE.

And the defender has called on the fans to once again help in making the club’s home ground a fortress.

“We need to make this a hard place for people to come.

“It’s a long way for most teams to come and we need to get the fans behind us.

“It was great to see them at Southampton last week and hopefully with them behind us on Sunday we can bring three points home.”
