FEATURE: Grace Ayre On A Breakthrough Campaign

One of the most pleasing aspects of Durham Women’s campaign to date has been the continued emergence of the club’s young players.

Hannah Greenwood, Lily Crosthwaite and Grace Ayre have all been regulars in the match day squad, with the latter pair playing a role in every match to date.

This sustained run of first-team involvement comes after a breakthrough 2021/22 season, in which the duo caught the eye in a number of cameo appearances – which largely came in the Continental Tyres Cup.

And while their potential was clear to see, did Ayre expect to be as heavily involved in the first-team fold this campaign?

“No, definitely not,” replied the defender, when posed that question.

“I thought I’d be more of a squad player and helping out where needed.

“But I’m buzzing I have been able to start and help the team so far this season.”

It was something of a baptism of fire for the full-back, who was handed her first start in the opening day clash with local rivals Sunderland in front of a bumper crowd at Maiden Castle.

That was a real introduction to life in the Barclays Women’s Championship for Ayre, who now believes she is beginning to adapt to the rigours of the second tier.

“I think I’m starting to find my feet now, a couple of games in,” she said.

“It is a big jump and you switch off for one second, and it can mean a goal.

“But I think I’m getting used to it now.”

Key to that adaptation has been the presence of a number of battle-hardened senior players alongside Ayre.

In what is a vastly experiened defensive unit, the youngster has been able to draw upon the experiences of those playing alongside her as she looks to make her mark.

And there is one player in particular that has played an important role.

“It’s important to have that experience to learn from,” explained Ayre,

“Salicki has been a big help in getting used to the level and building my confidence up. She always says I deserve to be here and she’s helping me massively in the league.”

Ayre has joined the rest of the squad in training on a full-time basis this season – something that the defender is quick to appreciate.

“It’s a dream come true.

“I love playing football, so doing this every single day… there’s nothing to complain about.”

So in her debut season fully in the first-team environment, what has been the standout moment for Ayre so far?

“The Blackburn win.

“We had been waiting for a win and knew it was coming, and Mac’s goal was quite special!”

Ayre has also appreciated the opportunity to play in front of some large crowds – with Maiden Castle drawing two strong attendances for the opening two games of the campaign.

“I’m not used to it really,” she admitted.

“But the turnout at Maiden Castle and at the away games is unreal.

“The fans are unbelievable and we hear them all the time.”
