Durham Women captain Sarah Wilson believes the first few weeks of pre-season have delivered everything the side could have hoped for.
The Wildcats are ready to embark on their fourth week of preparations for the new Barclays Women’s Championship campaign, with plenty of work already completed at Maiden Castle.
And for Wilson, the early weeks of pre-season have given the side plenty of cause for optimism.
“We’re coming up to the end of week three now and it’s been really positive,” explained the skipper.
“It’s good to see the new players fitting in nicely, everyone working hard and it all coming together.
“It’s been fantastic so far.
“Everyone came back flying and that helped the cause going forward,” she continued.
“It’s been really positive and that’s what you want with a new model and setup.”
A trio of new signings have arrived at Durham over the course of the summer months, with Georgia Robert, Tatiana Saunders and Jess Clarke bolstering the ranks.
All are familiar faces to the squad having played against the club in recent years, and have fitted in seamlessly in the North East.
“The players coming in, we’ve played against them in the past and it’s a little bit strange to see them in and around our team!,” joked Wilson.
“But I feel like we’re all fitting together nicely and we’re all together.
“You can see everyone is working hard and striving toward that first game of the season.”
And that first game – the visit of local rivals Sunderland on August 21 – is now just under a month away.
Excitement levels, therefore, are beginning to rise.
“We can’t wait to get back on the pitch in front of the fans,” said Wilson.
“Hopefully it will be a sell-out and I’m sure the fans are missing the games as much as we’re missing them.
“A local derby, it’ll be good for everyone.
Tickets for Durham Women’s opening day game with Sunderland are selling very quickly – with a sellout expected.
The game will be an all-ticket fixture, with no tickets available on the gate. All tickets must be bought online in advance of match day.
