BIG MATCH PREVIEW: Liverpool (A)

Durham Women will face one of their toughest tests of the season this weekend, as they travel to title-chasing Liverpool.

After two back-to-back draws, the Wildcats will be looking to build on that platform when they travel to Birkenhead on Sunday.

But they will face a side with their eyes on a return to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League, and who haven’t tasted league defeat since the opening day.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the clash at Prenton Park…

The early season favourites for promotion, Liverpool have lived up to their billing and currently lead the FA Women’s Championship by a healthy eight-point margin.

Under the guidance of Matt Beard they have lost just once in the league this campaign, which came against London City Lionesses on the opening day.

They drew with Charlton Athletic last weekend but have been in fine form in recent weeks, showing different sides of their game and winning with both style and grit.

And that’s perhaps no surprise given that the Reds’ squad is packed with quality across the park.

In goal, former Wildcat Rachael Laws leads the division in clean sheets while in front of her the experience of Niamh Fahey, Rhiannon Roberts and Jasmine Matthews has been key.

Taylor Hinds and Charlotte Wardlaw have impressed at wing-back with the all-action Rachel Furness a key presence in the middle.

Leanne Kiernan has been scoring for fun this season while the January arrival of Katie Stengel bolstered Beard’s attacking options.

Durham Women will be without forward Nicki Gears who is continuing her comeback from a long-term injury.

Speaking ahead of the game, Naoisha McAloon said: “They’re a brilliant team and are at the top for a reason.

“We’re expecting a tough game but we’ll go out with a gameplan to try and get a result.

“We take each game as it comes and respect everybody in the league.

“We’re going out there ready to put up a fight.”
