BIG MATCH PREVIEW: Lewes (A)

Durham Women are set for their longest trip of the season this weekend – as they prepare to head to Lewes.

The fixture was initially scheduled for the first week of January but was rearranged following COVID-19 cases.

And now the trip kick-starts a run of three successive away games for the Wildcats as they enter the business end of the season.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the clash at the Dripping Pan…

Under the guidance of interim manager Craig Gill, Lewes have picked-up some eye-catching results of late.

They beat Crystal Palace last weekend courtesy of fine goals from Lucy Porter and Izzy Dalton and that saw the Rooks cement their place in 8th in the FA Women’s Championship.

But Lewes are just four points off third place and will no doubt be intent on climbing the table in the coming weeks.

And with a deep and talented squad at Gill’s disposal, they will have every chance of doing that.

Stopper Tatiana Saunders returned to the fold last week and kept a clean sheet, while the likes of Ellie Mason, Sophie O’Roure and Rebecca McKenna provided a solid backline ahead of her.

In midfield, the technical ability of Porter, Dalton, Freda Ayisi and Amelia Hazard means there are plenty of opportunities for Georgia Timms, Ini Umotong and the club’s other fine forwards.

Durham Women will be without forward Nicki Gears who is continuing her comeback from a long-term injury.

Speaking ahead of the game, Mollie Lambert said: “It’s always going to be a tough challenge against Lewes, especially being so far away.

“But we have a lot of experience, young players and hopefully we can get three points and start a little bit of a journey.

“We’re going to be on the bus for probably three days! But it’s a good opportunity for us to team bond.”
