REPORT: London City 1-2 Durham

Durham Women came from behind to register a vital win at London City Lionesses.

A quick-fire brace from Beth Hepple saw the Wildcats claim all three points at Princes Park after Mollie Rouse had given the hosts the lead.

It was nothing less than Durham deserved after a much-improved second half display in the capital.

The visitors had actually begun the first-half brightly and came close early on through a Sarah Robson header that dropped just the wrong side of the post.

But with their first real chance of the game, London City took the lead – Rouse seeing her header sneak home after a fine cross from Lucy Fitzgerald.

That buoyed the hosts, who came close to doubling their advantage when Jamie-Lee Napier flashed a strike from 20 yards just wide of the upright.

But Durham were still fashioning some chances, with Liz Ejupi warming the palms of Shae Yanez with a powerful drive before she then turn provider after closing down a clearance – teeing up Rio Hardy whose effort was narrowly wide.

Hardy then again came close with a low drilled effort before Naoisha McAloon twice denied Atlanta Primus in quick succession as the half drew to a close.

Durham would be quick to admit the first half fell well below their expected standards – but the second did not.

Indeed, their renewed vigour was clear from the restart as they pressed London City relentlessly and committed numbers forward.

And they were rewarded with barely a minute on the clock, as Hepple’s corner swung in at the near post to draw the visitors level.

There wouldn’t be long to wait for a second either – Hepple seeing a free-kick slip through the hands of Yanez not five minutes later to complete a remarkable turnaround.

The margin of victory could have been greater, too. Kathryn Hill curled wide while Lauren Briggs and Ellie Christon both came close from range.

At the other end, it was mainly routine stops for Naoisha McAloon as Durham saw out the game – and a lengthy period of stoppage time – with minimal fuss.
