WILSON: “Everything Has Been Up There”

Sarah Wilson says that Durham Women have been able to maintain their high standards this week – as they prepare for the visit of Crystal Palace.

The Eagles will provide the Wildcats’ first opposition of 2022 after last weekend’s clash at Lewes was postponed, with Durham looking to build on a positive results against Blackburn before the winter break.

And while that result may have occurred almost a month ago, Wilson says that the momentum gained from it remains.

“It was a tough game against Blackburn and we knew we had to step it up a level,” explained the captain.

“Coming off the back of an FA Cup win as well, it was really important we kept that momentum.

“The Blackburn result was fantastic and it was an all-round effort from everyone, and we’ve maintained those really high standards.

“Everything has been up there and hopefully we can keep pushing on into another tough weekend.”

This weekend’s opponents will themselves also come with no shortage of wind at their backs, having enjoyed a fine run of form towards the end of 2021 that propelled them up the table.

And Wilson knows that Durham must be guarded against their threats this weekend.

They are doing really well, and results show that,” she said of the Eagles.

“They’ve got some fantastic players and a really attacking forward line, so we know what we’re preparing for.

“We just have to make sure we focus on ourselves and what we’ve been working on in training, put that into practice on Sunday.”

Sunday’s game will be the first time Durham have stepped out at Maiden Castle in the New Year – and Wilson knows the home support can play a part this weekend.

“It’s massively important,” she said.

“Every single game now is huge for us. No-one can afford to drop points, but everyone is taking points of each other so it’s really competitive.

“We know that when the crowd gets behind us, how much of a difference it makes.

“We genuinely are grateful for the support and fingers crossed we can get another big crowd this weekend.”

Tickets for Durham Women’s clash with Crystal Palace remain available – and can be purchased online HERE.
