SALICKI: ‘We’ll Battle As Best We Can’

Becky Salicki says Durham Women are prepared to battle as they look to return to winning ways against Liverpool.

The Wildcats lost out in their last FA Women’s Championship game at Crystal Palace, and welcome the second-placed Reds on Sunday in a top-of-the-table clash.

And Salicki says the side haven’t dwelled on the reverse at Hayes Lane and are instead focused on making amends.

“It was a disappointing result for us, but we said straight after the game that we have a busy few weeks coming up so we’ve got the time to put it right,” said the defender.

“We all know it wasn’t good enough – and that’s not taking any credit off Crystal Palace.

“We’ve been working hard this week and we’re excited for Sunday.”

Liverpool, though, will undoubtedly pose a major threat.

The early favourites for promotion, they haven’t lost since the opening day and are in a rich vein of form – with Matt Beard this week named the league’s Manager of the Month.

“They’ve got a fantastic manager, fantastic players and a fantastic set-up,” said Salicki.

“They’re a team we have a lot of respect for, but it’s a football game.

“There’s 90 minutes and we’ll battle as best as we can.”

A bumper crowd is expected for the clash – and Salicki believes the home support could prove key.

“We’ve always said that we’d like to make Maiden Castle a fortress,” she added.

“The fans give us such a boost when they’re there.

“The Manchester United game was probably one of the best games I’ve ever been involved in because of the crowd – so it’s absolutely so important that the fans are there pushing us.”
