REPORT: Durham 2-0 Charlton Athletic

Durham Women battled their way to a vital victory over Charlton Athletic.

Goals from Kathryn Hill and Beth Hepple saw the Wildcats get back to winning ways in a controlled display.

Durham made three changes from the side that lost at Sheffield United with Abby Holmes, Dee Bradley and Bridget Galloway all handed starts.

And the hosts enjoyed a dream start as Hill picked up the pieces rom a corner and fired an unstoppable effort into the top corner.

In a cagey and hard-fought first half, it was Durham who created the better opportunities with Holmes sending a lofted effort over the bar before Becky Salicki’s free-kick flashed just ahead of Galloway.

The best Charlton could muster in the opening exchanges was a long-range effort from Bethan Roe which went comfortably wide, but the Wildcats were a constant threat.

Both Holmes and Lauren Briggs saw effort cleared off the line after visiting goalkeeper Eartha Cumings was caught out of her goal, before Lambert saw a looping effort held.

And Durham continued to push forward after the break with Galloway firing over after showing real persistence.

But the hosts wouldn’t have to wait long for a second – Hepple cooly dispatching a penalty after handball in the box.

The Addicks saw more of the ball following the second goal but still struggled to seriously test Megan Borthwick, although the stopper did have to come out and clear before Megan Wynne could latch onto a through ball.

There were shouts for a second Durham penalty when Holmes was brought down in the box, while a third almost came when Hill saw a powerful header held by Cumings.

Ella Rutherford hit the bar with an ambitious free-kick late on, as Durham managed the game well to wrap-up a deserved victory.
