NEWS: Johnson Extends Stay

Durham Women FC are delighted to announce that Ali Johnson has extended her stay at the club.

The former England U20 international joined the Wildcats in the latter stages of the 2020/21 season after a spell with Blackburn Rovers.

And she made a quick impression – scoring on her debut against Sheffield United and making a handful of appearances as the club secured a record-breaking league finish.

But with the new season approaching, Johnson is hoping to make an even bigger impact this time around.

“I’m really excited,” she said.

“Last year was a bumpy season but I feel like Durham is somewhere I can now push on and really start to bring the best out of me.

“The girls and staff are all like a big family which is why it was an easy decision to stay.

“I think we could push one further than last season –  we just need to get our heads down and work hard through pre season, then head into the season on the front foot.”

Johnson is also excited to meet the club’s supporters for the first time, having thus far been limited to featuring in behind closed doors fixtures for the Wildcats.

“That’s the one thing I’ve been really looking forward to,” she admitted.

“Thank you to our fans for sticking by us in these tough times and supporting us all the way because it hasn’t gone unnoticed.

“We will no doubt be welcoming them back with open arms and it will be nice to see them watch us live and not just through a stream.”

After seeing Johnson put pen to paper, manager Lee Sanders added: “Ali is a player that has impressed every time we have played up against her – initially at Sheffield United, she really caused us some problems, and similarly when she was at Blackburn for a short spell.

“She’s a player that I had enquired about prior to her signing for us and the circumstances weren’t quite right, but now we’re really pleased to get her up to Durham and settled in.

“I’m sure she will contribute a lot to the team this season.”

Ali Johnson is available to sponsor for the 2021/22 season. For just £500, businesses and individuals can benefit from a host of promotion – via our social media channels, website and match day programme – while also receiving their chosen player’s signed shirt! For more information, email mark.donnelly@durhamwfc.co.uk.
