Durham Women FC are delighted to confirm that Iris Achterhof has extended her stay with the club.
The Dutch forward, who joined the club prior to the start of the 2019/20 campaign, netted three times during her debut season in the North East.
Achterhof was sadly sidelined for the majority of the 2020/21 season after sustaining an ACL injury on the opening day of the season at Liverpool.
Now, the striker is keen to make an impact in the new FA Women’s Championship campaign.
“I’m very excited to play for Durham again this season,” she said.
“Everyone at the club has made me feel welcome from the start and they have taken very well care of me after I tore my ACL last season.
“It’s important for me to be at a place where I know I’m valued as a player and a person, and that place right now is Durham.
“I always believe that we can go all the way. We’ve shown it the last couple seasons and we’re ready to fight for it again.
“We’re one big family and we always have each other’s back, which shows on and off the pitch.
“We know each other’s strengths very well so as long as we use them in the right way, we’ll be a problem for any team in this league.
And Achterhof is once again relishing the chance to play in front of the club’s supporters at the Wildcats’ new home ground of Maiden Castle.
“I can’t even put it into words how excited I am for fans to be back,” she added.
“Playing without fans is just not the same. The support of our fans always helps us to give something extra and fight for the win until the very last second.
“Hopefully with the support of our fans, we can take our game to an ever higher level than ever before.”
Commenting on Achterhof’s return, manager Lee Sanders said: “Iris unfortunately suffered an ACL injury in the first game of last season, but she remained in the UK throughout COVID and has been very well supported by the club and our medical staff.
“She’s just working her way to back into full contact training and building her fitness up.
“After settling in after her first season we expected her to kick on in season two, but because of her injury that didn’t happen.
“Now we just need to be patient, get her fit and strong, and I’m sure Iris will be absolutely determined to carry on with that enthusiasm that she showed at the beginning of last season.”
Iris Achterhof is available to sponsor for the 2021/22 season.
