BIG MATCH PREVIEW: London Bees (H)

Durham Women will be back on home soil this weekend – as they welcome London Bees to Maiden Castle.

After three lengthy away trips to start the year, the Wildcats will take to the turf in the North East for the first time in 2021.

As per current government guidance, this fixture will be played behind closed doors.

Durham Women FC kindly ask all supporters to refrain from travelling to the ground, and to follow the game from home.

And ahead of the game, here’s everything you need to know – from stream details to social media coverage and more:

THE OPPOSITION

Managed by Lee Burch, the Bees are set to pose a stern test this weekend – having picked up some encouraging results of late.

The side drew with London City Lionesses last weekend and ended 2020 with a stalemate against Coventry United and were a tough nut to crack when Durham headed to The Hive earlier this season.

Key in that game was midfielder Charlie Esctcourt, whose well-taken free-kick showcased her quality. She could be joined in the engine room by the experienced Georgie Giddings and Bonnie Horwood, who is returning from injury.

Further back the field, Sarah Quantrill is a reliable presence between the sticks while centre back Georgia Robert is a real threat from set-pieces.

WE’VE MET BEFORE

The two teams met back in October, where goals from Becky Salicki and Molly Sharpe handed us a 2-1 win.

Our last meeting in the North East was a 3-1 win at New Ferens Park last season.

PRE-MATCH COMMENTS

Captain Sarah Wilson said: “It’s always a tough test against Bees. They’ve been in the league for a long time and we know it’s going to be an incredibly tough test.

“Last time we played them, although we won 2-1, we’ve always said it was one of our toughest games of the season. They made it incredibly difficult for us and we know today will be another huge challenge for us.”

The match will be played at Maiden Castle.
