REPORT: Durham 0-0 Blackburn

Durham Women endured a frustrating afternoon as they were held to a goalless draw by Blackburn Rovers.

The Wildcats dominated the possession at Maiden Castle but failed to seriously trouble visiting stopper Alex Brooks – while Blackburn themselves arguably could have snatched victory.

Lee Sanders made one change from the side that drew with Aston Villa a fortnight ago as Nicki Gears returned to the side.

And Durham began brightly and piled on the early pressure with a string of corners.

But haven’t dealt with the host’s promising start, Blackburn grew into the game and began to threaten.

Ellie Fletcher sent a volley over from range before Durham skipper Sarah Wilson did well to block Elise Hughes’ goal-bound shot.

Down the other end, Molly Sharpe saw a shot held by Brooks before her cross was glanced wide by Nicki Gears.

It was a first-half full of effort and endeavour from both sides, but lacking in any real moments of quality.

Opportunities were scarce, although Emily Roberts did see a late shot deflected wide following a quick counter-attack.

It was much the same story after the interval, although Blackburn felt they should have had a penalty moments after the restart after Ali Johnson looked to be felled in the area – only for the referee to wave away appeals.

Roberts then sent a header wide at the other end, but chances were still proving elusive for both sides.

But there was to be one big opportunity apiece before the final whistle.

First for Blackburn, who won a free-kick on the edge of the area after Megan Borthwick felled Saffron Jordan – but Johnson’s effort struck the wall.

Then Durham came close through Sarah Robson, who stabbed wide a cross at the near post.

There was to be no late drama though, as both sides left with a point.

Durham XI: Borthwick, Hill, Briggs, Lambert, Wilson, Robson, Hepple, Sharpe (Crosthwaite), Gears (Galloway), Christon, Roberts

Subs not used: Reid, Brown, Lee, Greenwood
