Emily Roberts has backed Durham Women to offer title favourites Liverpool a stern test when they head to Prenton Park on Sunday.
The Wildcats face the recently relegated Reds in their FA Women’s Championship opener on Sunday, September 6 (kick-off 2pm).
Durham enjoyed a competitive and challenging pre-season which saw them take in five fixtures against Championship, Super League and Champions League oppositions – culminating in two wins, two defeats and a draw.
And Roberts – who has recently returned from a long-term injury – was pleased to be back in action, and even netted once during the pre-season campaign.
“Obviously it’s been tough for all the girls in how long we’ve had off,” she said.
“But everyone was buzzing to get back into pre-season. We’ve all been working hard while we’ve been in lockdown, and pre-season has gone well.
“Now we’re looking forward to the start of the season.”
“I’m looking forward to kicking a ball again,” she continued.
“A season out is not nice, so I’m looking forward to getting back again.
“It’s just frustrating. You get so frustrated at your body because it won’t do what you want to do. It’s not nice looking on, but the girls did well last year – and hopefully we can push on again this year.”
Roberts is now raring to go ahead of the new season – which begins at Liverpool.
Vicky Jepson’s side have been tipped as title favourites in most quarters, but Roberts believes Durham can’t be ruled out just yet.
“I think the best thing to do is just to prepare as best we can and play our game,” she said.
“We’ll give them a good game on Sunday.”
The game is set to be played behind closed doors – but will be broadcast on the FA Player – something Roberts feels Durham have to ‘make the most of’.
“It’ll be a bit weird, a bit quiet, but we just have to make the most of it.
“Hopefully we’ll see the fans as soon as we can – and we’ll do our best to come home with the three points on Sunday.”
