It’s been seven months since Durham Women last took to the field in a competitive action – but that wait comes to an end this weekend.
The Wildcats are back and kick-off their 2020/21 season away at title favourites Liverpool in what is sure to be a tantalising tie.
Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the fixture:
THE OPPOSITION
A regular in the FA Women’s Super League since its inception, Liverpool have won the top tier twice – in 2014 and 2015 – but were relegated last season.
However, the Reds have enjoyed a fruitful summer under manager Vicky Jepson and have a strong squad at their disposal.
A number of key players – including Jess Clarke, Rachel Furness, Rhiannon Roberts, Mel Lawley and Kirsty Linnett, have been retained with extra quality added.
Former Wildcat Rachael Laws has joined between the sticks while ex-Everton defender Taylor Hinds adds some quality at the back.
WE’VE MET BEFORE
We met Liverpool in the Continental Tyres Cup last season, losing 3-1 at Prenton Park. Molly Sharpe got the goal for Durham.
Prior to that, we last met Liverpool in the same competition during the 2018/20 season, playing out an entertaining 3-3 draw at New Ferens Park.
Emily Roberts bagged a brace with Abi Cottam also on the scoresheet, with Liverpool then claiming the bonus point on penalties.
PRE-MATCH COMMENTS
“I think the best thing to do is just to prepare as best we can and play our game,” said Emily Roberts.
“We’ll give them a good game on Sunday.”

The match will be played at Prenton Park, Prenton Road West, Birkenhead, CH42 9PY.
Kick-off is at 2pm on Sunday, September 6.
STREAMING INFORMATION
The game will be played behind closed doors based upon current government guidance – but can be live-streamed for free via the FA Player.
