Durham Women FC are delighted to confirm that defender Abby Holmes will remain with the club for the 2020/21 season.
The versatile full-back has been a key part of the Wildcats’ squad since her arrival at the club in 2018 following a spell playing full-time with PEC Zwolle in the Netherlands.
Holmes has gone on to play a key part at both ends of the field – helping Durham to the best defensive record in the FA Women’s Championship last season while also netting twice in the 2019/20 campaign.
And now Holmes is looking forward to the new season – which begins on September 6 at Liverpool.
“It’s great to be back,” she said.
“After a few months of being away, everyone is itching to get back on the pitch and hopefully we’ll be back in front of our fans sooner rather than later.”
Manager Lee Sanders added: “Having Abby back is great news for staff and players.
“She was an integral part of the back line that was so successful last season and I’m sure she will want that to continue going forward.
“She’s an extremely competitive character but very supportive of the players around her, especially when we are up against it sometimes, and in my opinion has improved her game personally since arriving with us – and she’s still learning even with her experience.
“One thing’s for sure – there’s not many forwards that will be relishing coming up against her this season!
“We’re delighted she’s here for another year.”
