REPORT: Durham 1-1 London City

Durham Women were forced to share the spoils despite a dominant performance against London City Lionesses.

Ylenia Priest’s own-goal looked to have handed the Wildcats victory, but Kallie Balfour’s strike ensured the points were shared – with Durham made to rue missed chances.

The hosts made two changes from the side that beat Leicester City, with Danielle Cox and Eleanor Dale coming into the side.

And it was the Wildcats who began on the front foot, with Beth Hepple seeing a corner tipped onto the bar before Abby Holmes fired over from close range after a slick passing move.

A deserved breakthrough came after 22 minutes, with Nicki Gears’ tantalising cross turned into her own net by Priest – as Hepple and Dale lurked at the back post.

That buoyed London City, with Megan Borthwick having to tip Liz Ejupi’s effort wide before the resultant corner saw Vyan Sampson’s header cleared off the line by Ellie Christon.

Juliette Kemppi would come closer still though, with her shot beating Borthwick but coming back off the post.

Dale and Sharpe were both denied by Lucy Thomas as the half drew to a close, and Durham carried that momentum forward after the interval.

Holmes flashed a fine ball across the box which was just begging for a touch, before Sharpe sent a bicycle kick narrowly over the crossbar.

Sharpe also struck the post as Durham piled on the pressure, but the hosts were dealt a sucker-punch when Balfour rifled home from distant with her first touch after coming off the bench.

Sarah Robson looked to have restored the Wildcats’ lead as she nodded home from close range, but her effort was controversially chalked out for offside.

Dale was then superbly denied by Thomas, as Durham were forced to settle for a point on home soil.
