NEWS: Wildcats Launch Northumberland Academy

Durham Women Football Club are delighted to announce a new partnership with Northumberland College – which will allow aspiring footballers North of the Tyne to follow a dual-career pathway.

The partnership will see the club form our third Girls’ Football Academy which will compliment our existing academies at Durham Sixth Form Centre and SRC Bede.

The academy will form a key part of the clubs’ player pathway and will give aspiring footballers aged 16-19 the opportunity to combine playing football with studying for a range of vocational BTEC qualifications with our partners, Northumberland College.

Players will represent Durham Women FC in both the National Football Youth League and North East Colleges League – allowing them to compete against some of the best players in the country and also offering a more recreational option while receiving the same level of coaching.

And the coaching will be delivered by a familiar face in Durham Women FC first team player Sarah Robson, who is a current international with Northern Ireland.

Players in our Girls’ Football Academy may also have the opportunity to represent Durham Women FC as part of one of our squads which will compete in the FA Women’s National League (including reserves) or FA Women’s Championship in 2019/20 – but there is also an option to continue with current clubs on weekends, as this offering is not just exclusive to Durham players.

Northumberland College – which boasts a range of modern facilities – offers an extensive range of BTEC courses. You can find out more about the courses on offer HERE.

Speaking after finalising the partnership, Lee Sanders said: “It’s great to announce this partnership with Northumberland College which completes the clubs plan to be able to offer education, coaching and physical performance support to female players – whether they play for Durham at weekends or other clubs more local to them.

“We already have our successful site in Durham (Durham Sixth Form), the new Tees Valley area partnership (Stockton Riverside Bede Campus) and now north of the Tyne with our new partners at Northumberland College which gives us great coverage throughout the North East area for any of our players who want to study and play in our Academy programme on Wednesday’s, whether that’s at National Football Youth League level or North East Colleges level.

“It’s also exciting that Sarah Robson will be leading this site as she offers a wealth of experience at the highest levels domestically and internationally in the women’s game.

“I’d encourage any and all players in the North Tyneside and Northumberland areas to come along and take a look at Northumberland College and the courses they offer and attend the football taster day on June 10th with Sarah”

If you’re interested in being a part of our exciting academy, please attend one of our taster sessions.

Our next session will be held at College Road, Ashington, NE63 9RG on the Monday 10th June from 4:00pm – 5:30pm.
