REPORT: Durham 2-2 Aston Villa

Durham Women and Aston Villa shared the spoils in an evenly-matched contest at New Ferens Park.

Lisa Robertson’s first goal for the Wildcats was quickly cancelled out by Jodie Hutton, before Kerri Welsh handed the Villains the lead before the break.

But Becky Salicki’s late goal secured a point for the hosts – with both teams having late chances to seal a victory.

With a vicious wind wreaking havoc, chances were few and far between in the opening stages.

Beth Hepple drilled a free-kick narrowly wide before a Zoe Ness cross was hacked away before Robertson could convert.

But Robertson wouldn’t have to wait long to find the net – the midfielder seizing on a poor defensive pass before slotting home her first for the club.

Durham’s lead lasted barely a minute, however, with Hutton picking the pocket of Sarah Wilson before driving forward and firing beyond Hannah Reid’s reach.

And Villa were able to take the lead before the break when Welsh rifled home after the Wildcats failed to fully clear a cross.

That spurred the hosts into life and Durham enjoyed plenty of possession in the second half – without really troubling visiting stopper Sian Rodgers.

Rachel Lee thought she had reduced the deficit when she converted from close range, but was controversially deemed to be offside as she wheeled away in celebration.

Substitute Nicki Gears then fired narrowly wide as the hosts upped the tempo.

And they earned the equaliser their play deserved when Wilson nodded a corner back across the face of goal where Salicki bundled home.

Both teams had late chances to win it – Hutton striking the post before Gears saw a shot tipped over – but neither could take advantage.

Durham XI: Reid, Hill, Robertson (Christon), Wilson, Robson, Hepple, Ness, Salicki, Roberts, Holmes (Gears), Lee

Subs not used: Borthwick, Ryan, Dixon, Cottam
