Durham Women FC manager Lee Sanders has been awarded the League Managers’ Association (LMA) Manager of the Month award for October 2018.
The Wildcats went unbeaten through the month as Sanders, alongside head coach Steph Libbey, led to the side to two victories and one draw to build on a strong start to the season.
And, impressively, Durham managed to go the whole month without conceding a goal as they followed-up a draw at Aston Villa with victories over London Bees and Crystal Palace.
Such a fine run of form sees the Wildcats challenging at the top of the FA Women’s Championship during the early months of the season and – with the side yet to lose in the new-look league – the LMA panel awarded Sanders with the coveted prize.
Speaking after receiving his Thomas Lyte trophy, Sanders said: “It’s a huge honour for the club and the management team and coaching staff to receive this award.
“A huge amount of credit must go to our first team coach Steph Libbey who puts a tremendous amount of hours in on the grass alongside the rest of the coaching staff – Chris, Mark, Andy and Simon – and our medical staff – Nat and Dave – plus the operational staff who ensure everything runs smoothly.
“And last but not least, the players should receive praise for this as they are the ones that have to cross the line and get the results like we have done, and that has culminated in us receiving this award.”
On Durham’s achievements, Chair of the LMA panel Spacey-Cale said: “The management team at Durham Women’s Football Club has done a fantastic job so far this season, especially throughout October.
“They’ve demonstrated the importance of working well together behind the scenes to support the players and help them perform in training and most importantly, during matches.”
The panel consists of Marieanne Spacey-Cale (LMA Member and Southampton FC Head of Girls and Women’s Football/Head Coach), Alex Scott (Ex-England International and football broadcaster), Jen O’Neill (Editor of She Kicks – women’s football magazine) and Alan Curbishley (LMA Board Member and LMA Manager of the Year 1999/2000).
