REPORT: Durham 3-0 London Bees

The Wildcats rounded off their home campaign in the FA WSL Spring Series with a resounding win over London Bees.

Nicki Gears opened the scoring after five minutes with Beth Hepple and Zoe Ness netting after the break to ensure Durham remained unbeaten at New Ferens Park.

Lee Sanders made one change from the side that beat Brighton as Lauren Briggs came in for Nicola Gibson, and the Wildcats started on the front foot with some early pressure.

And that early pressure paid off after five minutes as Gears was left unmarked to power home a header from Hepple’s free-kick in the fifth minute.

Stopper Rachael Laws was then called into action as she had to save from Jo Wilson’s attempted lob, before her opposite number Sophie Harris denied both Hepple and Gears.

Both sides were struggling to create chances in a low-key first half, with Emily Roberts sending an effort from 20 yards over the bar and Laws having to claw away an inswinging Bees corner.

The second half, however, was a far more entertaining affair.

Gears was the first to threaten as she saw an effort strike the post before the follow-up was cleared off the line.

Emma Beckett then curled a free-kick wide for the visitors before Wilson threatened again – Becky Salcki doing well to tackle her as she threatened to shoot.

Hepple then saw a low effort held by Harris but she wouldn’t have to wait long to find the back of the net – the midfielder lofting the ball past the keeper after Roberts had flicked it on.

Skipper Sarah Wilson then saw an effort blocked after a neat corner routine, with Ness then seeing two efforts flash narrowly wide.

The Scottish striker was the next to net, though, as she powered a shot over Harris from the edge of the area.

Durham had opportunities to add more goals too, with Roberts and Salicki seeing efforts saved in the dying minutes.

But three goals were enough for Durham, who wrapped up a key win in front of their highest crowd of the Spring Series.
